INTERVIEW with REVERENCE Guitarist Bryan Holland

Posted on 20 July, 2012 by Javi

A few months ago we had the first news of Reverence, new band formed by musicians with some enviable careers behind and following publication and listening to his first and excellent album When darkness calls, we got in touch with them to make this interesting interview. Bryan Holland, guitarist us kindly replied.

Firstly thank you from todoheavymetal.com (Spain) the time you toméis to answer these questions. Let them.

To give the reader background todoheavymetal.com What can you tell us the beginnings of Reverence?

Frontman Todd Hall and myself on guitar formed the core of the band in early 2010.Todd is currently JACK STARR Burning BURNING STARR and previously I was the guitarist NWOBMH TOKYO BLADE and arrested. I know the former drummer of SAVATAGE and CRIMSON GLORY, Steve ‘Dr. KIlldrums’ Wacholz for over 15 years. He joined the project after hearing the first demos. Doc then suggested SANXTION former guitarist, Pete Rossi as our second guitar. Pete and I have very similar influences so our styles are very complementary and work very well together. Then Todd brought bassist Ned Meloni also BURNING STARR JACK STARR and FUNNY MONEY.

Where does the name of the band?

Actually, my wife, Tracy, suggested the name. We wanted something that would fit with the style of the material we were writing. We toyed with several possibilities, but no name seemed to fit.The first song we wrote Todd and I was called ‘Revolution Rising’ and in it, Tom says: “Bow down in reverence, bow down in fear.” Tracy took the name of this letter and we suggested. Its meaning was also important because we wanted a name that had “something” behind. For us, the name was perfect just because we wrote the album with a particular spirit, bringing together the classic spirit of the eighties metal, we grew and we worship, hence the name, the reverence of the metal.

Once you decide to mount this new band? You set about writing music together and you begin to look first to the rest of the band?

I had a couple of guys in mind to join the band, but the music had to come first, it is difficult to create a band and not have even one song. So I started writing a few months before contacting the other guys. All sorted quickly and easily.

How contactáis with the rest of the band?

Well, I left TOKYO BLADE after our last tour and I took a short vacation until I decided where I wanted to go with the music. So, I started looking for a singer who would fit with the style of music I wanted to write. I found Todd’s myspace page New Year’s Eve 2010 and heard a few demos on your personal page. I contacted him, we talked about our interests and decided to try to make a group. We started writing and as we had some demos of songs contacted Doc and Frank, and both immediately agreed to join us. Actually, the songs called two guitarists, so Pete suggested Doc Rossi, with whom he had played a few years in a project. Ned came at the suggestion of Frank Todd and replaced after we recorded the album, since he could not participate due to certain personal reasons unrelated to the band.

With previous experience in other bands (TOKYO BLADE, BURNING STARR, SAVATAGE, CRIMSON GLORY …) why you decide to ride REVERENCE? To what extent can we consider you henceforth as a band with a future and not a project of a number of musicians with experience and an enviable resume?

Things were not going well with the other guitarist in TOKYO BLADE and the band and I just did not feel exhausted, but I had to give a lot of metal in my blood. REVERENCE has become our new musical vehicle. Doc had left and CRIMSON GLORY and SAVATAGE, and we always wanted to play together, this was the ideal forum. Although Todd and Ned are still BURNING STARR, we are all committed to REVERENCE feasible as a band and not just a project.

In fact, I’ve already started writing the next album!

Have you undergone many lineup changes until you come to the present?

Actually, no. The only change was Frank Kruckel staff, our low was also with me in TOKYO BLADE. He had some personal commitments and would not be an obstacle for the band as they firmly believed we had something good and special. I’m very fond of Frank and I’ll take a lot. But Todd quickly suggested Ned. I talked to him several times before all of us to meet to shoot the clip for “Too Late” and other videos and Ned was perfect, very professional and also is a great artist and writer.

Let’s talk a little disc … what you describe it to us? (Recording studios, compositions, producers, cover artist)

All songs were made by sending mp3 files. Although it is hard to believe, never wrote while in the same room, but try to focus on making an album based on some of our influences, but taking our own brand. Bands like JUDAS PRIEST, DIO, QUEENSRYCHE and the early SAVATAGE were in our minds during the writing process. Criss Oliva and Randy Rhoads, had a huge influence on Pete and I think my guitar show reasonable similarities in parts of the album. Hopefully others agree.

Once the script, did some pre-production trials before we get into the studio. We entered the studio on 11/11/11 and we recorded the bass and drum tracks in 37 Metro Detroit with Kevin Sharpe and Ryan Arini. Pete and I recorded the guitars in Metro, but after hearing it again, we decided to re-record most of the rhythm guitar solos and Pete and myself in my home studio. We returned at 37 Metro to record the chorus, but Todd played all of his vocal tracks in the studio of his own home.

I took the disc to my old friend Sid Garcia, who had mixed the latest album of TOKYO BLADE that I recorded with them. Sid did all the mixing and mastering addressed in Sight16 Studios in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The artwork was designed by Jobert Mello for Sledgehammer Graphix, who had also worked with me in my time in TOKYO BLADE. We are very happy with the final product in terms of sound and also visually. Sid and Jobert did exceptional work.

How much time have you spent to compose all the material and then to record it?

Actually, Todd and I wrote for over a year. Did not want to just throw together an album on the market, simply because to do so quickly. We knew we had to do our best and I think we did. Since I met Todd until the album came out it was two and a half years. I promise I will not take well to the next. There are probably some things I would change the album, but in the end I’m pretty happy with the end result, Sid did a fabulous job in production.

In addition to the 11 tracks that you recorded Have you missed one off the disc?

We wrote and recorded fifteen songs thirteen. One song, “Lost Generation” is added as a bonus track on the vinyl version in a couple of months. The other song is called “Twist of Fate”, is quite fast and there is an air to “Kill the King” RAINBOW. Who knows maybe we will include it in the next album. It just did not fit with the “flow” of the new album, so … we’ll see.

The cd has been in business about 1 month do you have any data on how it is working?

So far it is selling in a very steady, but do not know the exact number of records sold, but I know it is working well in Europe and U.S. sales have been pretty great too.

In current times for music in general and for the heavy-power metal in particular, with sales every day under what results you expect to get with When darkness calls?

We tried not to have too high expectations, but we’re really pleased with the interest and support achieved so far. Of course, everyone wants more sales, but given the profile of bands that helped us with ours, we’re pretty happy overall.

Charlemos now your plans for the immediate future after publishing the disc.

We just shot a new video for our song and first single “Too Late”, which you can see here:http://youtu.be/B4GzT_geBKM

In a few weeks, we will launch a new video for “Bleed for me” and in less than a year, another video again, to help keep the interest up to our European tour and the United Kingdom in November. For now, Todd, Doc and I have been doing a lot of press to support the new album. As I mentioned above, I have also started writing to continueWhen darkness calls, although it probably will hear until September next year.

I guess by your country for submission shall blow live … by clubs, trying to join your forces with another band, what is your idea?

We have tried without success so far with some other bands unite for a U.S. tour and we also have offered some festivals, but the market is so poor that it just is not worth it.Right now, Europe is the destination where you want to unleash the band live, because there’s much more interest in our country.

Intentaréis? Come play in Europe?

Yes, we have confirmed dates for November. Be the dates in Germany, Belgium, Holland and Switzerland and we are trying to compromise some additional dates in the UK.

Of the times you’ve played in Spain with your previous projects what memories you keep the country in general and the Spanish public?

Our tours of Spain were fantastic: we had a fabulous time, the fans there are great and we got a lot of love, so we hope to return and add some dates to our tour Spanish.

Can we have any hope of being able to see you on our stage?

So far we have no date in Spain but I’d love to your beautiful country. I have very fond memories of playing there. Specifically in the Legends of Rock festival where our reception was overwhelming, so I do not think the reception was less warm REVERENCE than it was at the time.

For our part around, thank you again for your attention and we hope to see you soon. For now we hear your confomaremos with great music. Anything else you’d like to add to todoheavymetal.com readers?
