Reverence – When Darkness Calls (2012)

(Translated from Spanish)

Many readers may remember the following bands: Tokyo Blade, Savatage, Crimson Glory, Jack Starr’s Burning Starr, Funny Money, well, this review compiles has some former members of the groups referred to form the newest band of Power Metal American namedReverence.

In early 2010 there is the arising of Reverence when guitarist Bryan Holland (formerly of Tokyo Blade) together with Todd Michael Hall(vocalist Jack Starr’s Burning Starr) occurs to them the great idea to form a new power metal band , adding further the excellent relations that occurred immediately, the creative work was not a problem and ideas on who would perform the songs started flowing.

An excellent drummer within a cluster is indispensable, but that was not his biggest drawback, Bryan knew he could count Steave “Doc” Wacholz (Ex Savatage – Former Crimson Glory) since 15 years are friends and always wanted to play together , for the bass line had a very clear idea of who was the one, Ned Meloni (Ex Jack Starr’s Burning Starr – Ex Funny Money). The last piece of the puzzle came together with the excellent recommendation of Doc, Pete Rossi (Ex Sanxtion) with its graceful had previously played guitar in a project with Doc, so do not doubt for a moment in doing part of the band and then a brief hearing it became clear that his style was the right one and that Reverence had to have it.

This new band originally from Detroit, Michigan debut with his first CD titled “When Darkness Calls” which was released by Ice Razar Records, was recorded at the Metro 37, mixed and mastered at Sight 16 Studios, and was officially launched in May , 2012. It also has planned a tour of Europe and the United States this year, hopefully decongest his schedule a bit and can also make your tour of Latin America.

Without further ado his first song titled “When Darkness Calls”, begins with a few chords and intriguing extremely quiet, serenity continues but accompanied by second guitar riffs and drums. After this short intro is the power of the topic, the guitars are accelerated markedly, the battery stands to set the pace in an impressive way, an excellent set of dishes, a double bass that rumbles all the time and with a mighty power in the choirs. The choral work of the vocals in the verses and choruses is perfect, exquisite engage with the topic, the vocalist is another important factor, has a very versatile voice, his vocal range without any effort may vary between bass and treble, the remarkable bass line is always listened to with a lot of ease thereby sealing composition first.

After the grand opening continued with “Bleed For Me” where their initial riffs give you a slight idea of how to develop the track. The excellent guitars immediately immerse you in its sound, again highlighting a battery on the other instruments, a bass that roars in the background, a voice most of the time is in a high range and a good guitar solo near the end, are the main ingredients of this song. One issue that would acceptable, despite its excellent composition lacks the explosiveness of the previous track, very good but too obvious to develop.

“Phantom Road”, a song that starts with good pace, where the voice is the star all the time and besides that is surprisingly easy to reach extremely high notes, a subject that would qualify under the heavy metal, bringing together all requirements of the genre. The battery has a transcendent performance, guitars equally fit the pace and as expected the bass properly complements a very good guitar solomidway and finally showing the virtues of its actors.

The work continues and it’s time to go back in time “Devil In Disguise” his fourth track will take you directly to the eighties power metal style, I think I mentioned before the virtuoso work of the battery but it is impossible not to, is really outstanding the work, guitars with catchy riffs but also a matter that we offer admirable one, low escorting good sound and a voice that shows an ability to adjust the sound of the theme.

His fifth song titled “Too Late” begins with a soft chords and then inputting the powerful riffs and the majesty of the battery, the voice work is impeccable, it is noteworthy that this is the first track where not achieved distinguish under which attribute to the overall sound of the song which is very strange, there is a mixture of various genres so it is very difficult to define.

Without realizing it we find in his track “Gatekeeper” where their energetic riffs, its impressive battery, heartbreaking voice, all seasoned with a touch of the eighties and excellent single, mixed to offer a theme that is sure to be a delight for your ears.

“The Price You Pay” a very similar to the previous, catchy riffs without realizing induce you to move your head, a battery that at times becomes a little slower than previous issues but very in keeping with the theme they are playing , an amazing vocals, a bass line and a very well defined coral remarkable work.

Getting closer and closer to the end we “Monster” in which the bass plays a fundamental role at times becoming the protagonist of the song, the guitars riffs with powerful complement to the excellent work carried out by the drums and a voice that is constantly changing between bass and treble that seems to never tire.

Its theme “Revolution Rising”, at times it seems that you are listening to a song by Iron Maiden as there is a certain similarity especially at the beginning and the vocal work. Well once made this little comparison I must mention the virtuosity of all members in this track, you find absolutely everything, a powerful voice, a battery that sets the pace and echoes in your ears all the time, some guitars require you shake your head to listen and a bass line that complements the sound quality efficiently.

“After The Leaves Have Fallen” its penultimate issue and the ballad of the album, a soft sound and melancholy which differs completely from everything we’ve been hearing so far, but the ballad it does not mean that no hear some excellent riffs, and when that happens the voice is completely transformed to the point that completely exceeds your vocal range, then an excellent guitar solo that is escorted by drums and bass to return to the original sound.

Unfortunately we reach the end but closed with a flourish, “Vengeance Is Mine” is his last song and it lives up to everything it standsReverence, as in all previous issues we highlight a battery powerful, virtuosic guitars, voice and majestic vocals, an excellent one and finally a bass line is heard clearly and complements the other instruments.

It’s been a long road but very satisfying and I have nothing else to do some more entries.

Before the release of “When Darkness Calls” was spread almost unstoppable publicity about this new project mostly by the trajectory of all its members, so many of the followers of various genres and sub genres of metal were with high expectations. Personally I am convinced that what is offered by the intense marketing campaign was well above what I expected.

Constantly maintained classic power metal sound that many bands today put aside, the riffs are catchy and contain enough to get your attention and make you shake your head, along with powerful guitar solos in each of the album’s songs.

The battery in my view is the main strength, most of the time with excellent speed, excellent handling of the double bass, an outstanding job in each of the dishes. The performance of this integral is really impeccable.

The second strength is vocally as their influences are from various genres. We find a characteristic vocalization Hard Rock and without warning that sound becomes the voice of Rob Halford of Judas Priest. I do not know if I exaggerate with the comparison but in my opinion what happens in most of the subjects, constant changes to acute low notes than any opera singer of band or even any tenor envy have that versatility.

That said, I stress that the expectations were surpassed categorically very anxious hope the next job in this excellent group also took the opportunity to offer congratulations to its members by generating a high quality album.
