Reverence – When Darkness Calls

News, Reviews, Si Staples by Lee Walker

Well it’s been a week and I have been sitting on the new ripping pure heavy metal work from the star project that is Reverence, not new kids on the block at all with the fusion of former members of Savatage, Tokyo Blade, Crimson Glory and Jack Starr’s Burning Starr. You can never really tell if band mates can collaborate and just hit that point that makes you say yes!!! This has done just that big time.

From the second the 1m42sec intro kicks in to the opening track ‘When Darkness Calls’, which stand up against the likes of Diamond Head’s ‘Am I Evil’, Reverence endears the listener to just sit back and bang their head in total happiness and conviction. The rhythm and bass work on the track ‘Phantom Road’ is simply perfect! Open up your ears and sink into musical bliss and I forgot to say that with former Savatage drum legend Steve ‘Doc Killdrums’ Walcholz on the drums, you can’t help but get drawn into the work of this underrated and amazing kitman.

The guitars, courtesy of both Bryan Holland and Pete Rossi, bring a extra tight, crunchy sound to each song.

Then there’s the perfect vocals of front man Todd Michael Hall who quite possibly may be the most underrated vocalist ever.

The guitar work everywhere is faultless. The bass and drum don’t stride too far behind as they come together on the heavy heart pounding of ‘The Price You Pay’. Finally we get to my favourite track on the record in my opinion, the supreme class that is ‘After The Leaves Have Fallen’, which can only be appreciated when played like it’s supposed to…loud!!!

In all honesty, every single track on this album is pretty much a work of art in itself. The best album I had heard this year was the Rush album ‘Clockwork Angels’ which has just been blown out of the water. So has every album I’ve heard over the last few years to be quite honest and if there was one band I’d love my band to be playing with live anywhere in the world right now, Reverence would be it.
Buy now highly recommended!!!
